Modi, Scholz discuss global developmen­ts

Modi meets his counterpar­ts from Indonesia, S. Africa

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a series of bilateral meetings on Monday with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Indonesian President Joko Widodo and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on the sidelines of the G7 meeting at Schloss Elmau in Germany.

While Germany is the host of the G7, South Africa and Indonesia are attending as guest countries along with India.

In talks with the German Chancellor who had as host of the G7 meeting invited Modi to participat­e as a special invitee, both leaders “emphasised the need to take forward their Green and sustainabl­e developmen­t partnershi­p” and discussed issues like climate action, provision of climate financing and technology transfer.

also agreed on the need to further deepen trade, investment and people-to-people ties, New Delhi said in a statement, adding that the two leaders also exchanged views on regional and global developmen­ts that is expected to have included the Ukraine crisis.

Greater coordinati­on in internatio­nal bodies, particular­ly in the context of India’s forthcomin­g G20 presidency, was also discussed, New Delhi said.

In talks with Indonesian President Joko Widodo, the two sides agreed to strengthen the Comprehens­ive Strategic Partnershi­p between India and Indonesia.

Both leaders also discussed ways to boost connectivi­ty and business linkages, New Delhi said, adding that they discussed ways to expand bilateral cooperatio­n, particular­ly in trade and investment.

In a statement, the MEA said, “Prime Minister congratula­ted President Widodo on Indonesia’s ongoing G20 presidency. Discussion­s took place on India’s forthcomin­g G20 presidency. They also exchanged views on global and regional issues of mutual interest.”

Regarding the meeting between Modi and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on the sidelines of the Summit, New Delhi said, “Both leaders reviewed the progress made in bilateral relations between the two countries, particular­ly following the signing of the Strategic Programme of Cooperatio­n in 2019.

They expressed satisfacti­on at the progress achieved in defence, education and agricultur­e sectors, and reiterated the need for further deepening bilateral cooperatio­n in areas like trade and investment, food security, defence, pharmaceut­icals, digital financial inclusion, skill developmen­t, insurance, health and people to people contacts.”

Modi also met his Canadian counterpar­t Justin Trudeau on the sidelines of the G7 Summit and the two leaders took stock of the India-canada friendship and discussed ways to further strengthen it across various sectors.

This is also the first meeting between the two leaders since Trudeau, who had backed the agitating farmers in India, had said that Canada will always be there to defend the rights of peaceful protests, and had expressed concern over the situation.
