TN’s virus tally crosses 90,000; more than 50,000 discharged

CHENNAI: With the intensive lockdown slated to continue till July 5 in Chennai, the number of COVID cases here registered another major spike with 2,393 persons testing positive on Tuesday. Tamil Nadu’s tally crossed the 90,000 mark with 3,943 fresh cases for the third consecutiv­e day and with 60 more deaths, the toll touched 1,201.

While the State capital’s cumulative share of virus cases till date was 58,327, Tamil Nadu’s tally stood at 90,167. Of the total numbers, 3,856 cases were reported in TN and the rest were returnees from other States/countries.

So far, 50,074 people have recovered in the State, including 2,325 people who were discharged from several hospitals and other facilities on Tuesday. Tamil Nadu currently has a total of 38,889 active cases of COVID-19.

However, despite the spike, Health Department officials said that the transmissi­on rate and infection rate have decreased in Chennai, while other districts like Madurai, Tiruchy, Chengalpat­tu, Vellore, Tiruvallur, Kancheepur­am and Tiruvannam­alai have been recording increasing number of cases. On Tuesday, Madurai reported 246 cases, while Chengalpat­tu had 160, Kancheepur­am 90 and Kallakuric­hi reported 66 cases. Theni reported 75 cases while 70 cases were reported in Vellore.

A total of 16 deaths were reported in private hospitals, while 44 died in government hospitals. A total of 57 deceased had underlying co-morbid conditions, while three did not have health issues.

The testing of samples from above 32,000 has slightly reduced for the second consecutiv­e day and only 30,242 samples were tested in past 24 hours. So far, TN has tested 11,70,683 samples.
