State records 4,329 positive cases, 64 deaths; positivity rate stands at 8.4%

CHENNAI: The number of coronaviru­s cases in TN crossed the 1 lakh mark with 4,329 more testing positive on Friday. Of this, 4,264 were from the State while the rest were returnees. The State’s total tally stands at 1,02,721.

Tamil Nadu has become the second State to report more than one lakh cases after Maharashtr­a which currently has more than 1,86,000 cases. With 12,13,891 samples tested so far, the positivity rate of the State stands at 8.4 per cent.

Chennai reported 2,082 cases of COVID-19, while Chengalpat­tu reported 330 cases, Madurai had 287 cases, 172 cases were recorded in Tiruvallur, 152 in Tiruvannam­alai and 145 cases in Vellore. Theni reported 126 cases, Kancheepur­am 121 cases, while Salem had 96 cases. Except Ariyalur and Perambalur, other districts reported several COVID cases.

A total of 64 deaths were reported in the State. Of this, 22 were in private hospitals and 42 in government hospitals. Of the fatalities, 33 were reported in Chennai while other districts accounted for the other 31 deaths. With more deaths reported on Friday, Chennai toll is 996. The total number of deaths in TN has climbed to 1,385. Of the total fatalities, 58 of

them had underlying co-morbid conditions, while six others did not have any underlying health issues. As per State Health Department

officials, more than 70 percent deaths have been recorded in patients who had underlying co-morbid conditions.

A total of 2,357 more people were discharged from several hospitals across the state post treatment. So far, 58,378 people have recovered from COVID-19 and there are 42,995 active cases in the State. Chennai alone accounts for more than 23,581 cases of COVID-19, including the patients who are under home isolation and treatment. The testing of samples in the State has gone up as 35,028 samples were tested in the last 24 hours. This is the highest number of samples tested in the State in a single day.
