100 medical students among 559 Indians to arrive in city

CHENNAI: As many as 559 Indians from Sudan, Kazakhstan, Oman and Kuwait arrived at the Chennai airport on Thursday night.

According to sources, more than 100 medical students were part of the 167 Indians who arrived on board the special flight from Kazakhstan. All of the passengers, after completing the COVID-19 test and the Customs and Immigratio­n clearance, were taken to quarantine camps in special vehicles. Sources said only 61 of the passengers opted for free quarantine facility and the rest were taken to hotels in Chennai.

The second flight to land in the city from abroad was one from Sudan, which arrived with 43 Indians. All of them, after completing all the formalitie­s were taken to paid quarantine facilities at various hotels in Chennai.

There were 180 Indians, including eight children, on the special flight that arrived from Oman. They too, after completing the routine procedures, were taken for quarantine to various hotels in the city.

The last one to arrive was one from Kuwait, which had 169 Indians on board. Sources said all of them were employees of a private firm in Kuwait and had come on the special aircraft arranged by their firm. All of them, after clearing the Customs and Immigratio­n checks, were taken to hotels in Chennai and sources said that COVID-19 test will be conducted for them in the hotels.

Meanwhile, on Friday, eight Army officials from Bhutan arrived at the Chennai airport on a special fight. They were taken to the Officers Training Academy in St Thomas Mount. Sources said the officers had come for training, which will commence only after them completing the mandated 14-day quarantine. The COVID-19 test will be conducted for them at the Academy.
