THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Heavy rains continued to lash Kerala with eight districts put under red alert on Sunday and the IMD sounding Orange alert in ten districts for Monday. The weatherman said that a low pressure area had formed over North East Bay of Bengal and Neighbourhood on Sunday morning. “A low pressure area has formed over Northeast Bay of Bengal and neighborhood today morning. It is likely to move west-northwest during the next 2-3 days and become more marked over Northwest Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood during next 24 hours,” a weather bulletin said.

UDUPI/MYSURU/MANGALURU: Heavy rains in the past few days have wreaked havoc in several parts of Karnataka, especially in coastal Udupi district where houses and crops have been submerged, prompting the government to rush disaster response force personnel for rescue operations on Sunday.

Officials in the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) said an alert for heavy rains has been issued for Malnad, coastal regions and a few interior and northern districts for the next couple of days.

The Udupi city and Manipal are inundated and roads of the city are submerged in water. Even the parking area of Udupi Sri Krishna Math also submerged in water. Areas on the banks of river Shambavi are flooded.

In Mysore, the Kabini reservoir authorities on Sunday issued a flood alert, warning residents living downstream of the reservoir asking them to move to safer locations as the outflow will be increased to nearly 35,000 cusecs. This will be done in anticipation of an increase in inflow.

The increase is expected due to heavy rains in the upstream areas of the dam and the catchment area of Kabini, which includes the Wayanad region of Kerala. IMD has sounded a red alert in Dakshina Kannada for three more days. As high tides are likely to lash the coast, the fishermen were advised against venturing into the sea for deep-sea fishing.

With the rise in Nandini and Shambavi river water, the paddy fields at Athooru Panja, Kilenjooru, Pavanje, Kadike and Sasihithlu have been inundated. In Kodagu, authorities issued red alert with Bagamandala, Talacauvery and Triveni sangama overflowing.

Meanwhile on Sunday, 1.20 lakh cusecs were released from Sonna barrage across the Bhima river due to heavy rainfall in Maharashtra.
