With 5,516 cases, TN tally rises to 5.41L

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu reported 5,516 fresh COVID-19 cases on Sunday, taking the overall tally to 5,41,993 while 60 more deaths pushed the death toll to 8,811. Of the tally, two were imported cases from Kerala and Rajasthan.

Of the deaths, 22 were reported from private hospitals and 38 in government hospitals. Among the 60 who succumbed to the virus, 51 had co-morbiditie­s. A 40-year old woman from Coimbatore admitted on September 17 died the next day due to COVID-19 pneumonia. A 37-year old woman from Tiruvallur district, suffering from Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus died due to respirator­y failure, the bulletin said. Chennai reported 12 more deaths taking the death toll in the city to 3,058.

Recoveries from COVID-19 on Sunday stood at 5,206 and cumulative­ly 4,86,479 people have walked out of various healthcare facilities so far. Active cases in the State stood at 46,703 and as many as 86,073 samples were tested and in total 64,74,656 specimens have been examined. On Sunday, Chennai reported 996 new cases, while Coimbatore continued to record a surge with 568 cases.

Meanwhile, Cuddalore reported 297 cases, 291 cases were recorded in Salem, 283 cases were recorded in Chengalpat­tu and 207 cases were reported in Tiruvallur. Among other districts, Kancheepur­am, Thanjavur and Tirupur recorded more than 150 cases respective­ly. The State capital accounts for 1,55,639 of the 5.41 lakh total positive cases.

Tamil Nadu has a total of 174 laboratori­es in the State after one private laboratory, Sri Samraj Health Services Private Limited, Tindivanam was removed temporaril­y from the ICMR list of approved laboratori­es for COVID-19 testing.
