Delhi Capitals prevails over Kings XI in a humdinger in IPL

-

DUBAI: The Indian Premier League witnessed a cliff-hanger as Delhi Capitals eked out a thrilling win over Kings XI Punjab in a Super Over here on Sunday. Delhi’s man with the golden arm Kagiso Rabida held his nerve to take two wickets in the Super Over and restrict Kings XI to just two runs. In reply, Delhi needed just two balls to scrape past a spirited Kings XI.

Earlier, setting off in pursuit of 158, Kings XI lost four wickets for the addition of five runs and was tottering at 35 for four in the seventh over. It soon became 55 for five and just when it looked like Delhi would record a facile win, Kings XI found a saviour in opener Mayank Agarwal who waged a lone battle scoring 89 off 60 balls. But with the scores level, and needing just a solitary run off two balls, Agarwal got out to Marcus Stoinis. Off the very next delivery, Stoinis removed Chris Jordan to lead the match into a Super Over.

Former Kings XI captain and India off-spinner R Ashwin, who has since been traded to Delhi, scalped the crucial wickets of Karun Nair and Nicholas Pooran in his first over, before leaving the field injured. Ashwin looked in considerable pain and the extent of his injury is yet to be ascertained. During Delhi’s batting, Stoinis (53) dragged his team single-handedly to 157/8 with a blistering half century after a stellar show from Mohammed Shami (3/15).

Brief scores: Delhi Capitals 157/8 in 20 overs (M Stoinis 53, S Iyer 39, M Shami 3/15) vs Kings XI Punjab 157/8 in 20 overs (M Agarwal 89, R Ashwin 2/2). Result: Delhi Capitals won in the Super Over
