Recoveries in TN inch closer to 5L; surge in western districts continues

CHENNAI: With 5,337 fresh cases of COVID-19 reported on Tuesday, the State tally has risen to 5,52,674. However, in a piece of good news, Tamil Nadu is inching closer to 5 lakh recoveries with 5,406 more patients getting discharged from several hospitals post recovery, taking the total number of discharges following treatment for COVID-19 to 4,97,377. Currently, there are a total of 46,350 active cases in TN.

The death count, meanwhile, again increased on Tuesday, as compared to the last few days, with 76 fatalities reported in the State.

Of the total deaths, 32 were reported in private hospitals, while 44 died in government hospitals.

Out of the 76, seven deceased did not have any co-morbid conditions, while 69 others had several underlying health issues including cardiac conditions, hypertensi­on, diabetes and kidney diseases. The death toll in Tamil Nadu stands at 8,947.

Western districts continued to witness a surge in the number of cases with Coimbatore reporting 595 fresh cases while Salem reported 291 cases of COVID-19. Tirupur district, which had been recording relatively low numbers, saw a spike with 369 fresh cases being reported on Tuesday.

While Chennai reported 989 fresh cases on Tuesday, other districts like Cuddalore reported 233 cases, Chengalpat­tu had 231 cases, Tiruvallur recorded 230 cases and Kancheepur­am reported 209 cases of COVID-19.

Two private laboratori­es, including Vinayaka Mission’s Kirupanand­a Variyar Medical College and Hospitals in Salem and Orbito Asia Diagnostic­s in Chennai have been approved for COVID-19 testing taking the total number of testing facilities in the State to 176, including 110 private laboratori­es.

In the past 24 hours, 84,730 more samples were tested for COVID-19 in the State and cumulative­ly, 666,40,058 samples have been tested till date.
