KINGS WINS ‘SUPER DUPER’ SUNDAY

DUBAI: In what turned out to be the second Super Over of the evening, Kings XI Punjab chased down Mumbai Indians’ score of 11 with two balls to spare to seal a memorable win in the Indian Premier League clash here on Sunday.

Requiring 12 runs, Kings XI opener Chris Gayle slammed Trent Boult’s first ball for a six and off the third ball, Mayank Agarwal smacked a four to level the scores. Agarwal finished the match with another boundary to give his team just its third win in nine matches. For Mumbai, this is its third loss from nine games and it remains second on the table. Punjab moves up to seventh ahead of CSK and Rajasthan Royals.

In the first Super Over, both Mumbai Indians and Kings XI were tied having scored five runs apiece. MI’s Jasprit Bumrah and Kings’ Mohammed Shami bowled immaculate yorkers under pressure to limit the batsmen’s scoring range to just singles.

Earlier, setting off in pursuit of 177, Kings XI looked in control of the chase as long as Rahul was at the crease who once again made a valuable contributi­on of 77 (51b, 7x4, 3x6). Chris Gayle and his compatriot Pooran chipped in with useful cameos of 24 runs each before getting out. Towards the end Deepak Hooda slammed an unbeaten 23 (16b, 1x4, 1x6) and along with Chris Jordan 13 (8b, 2x4), took the game into Super Over. For Mumbai, Bumrah was once again the pick of the bowlers taking three for 24.

Meanwhile, opener de Kock continued his rich vein of form, scoring a 43-ball 53 before Kieron Pollard and Nathan Coulter-Nile provided the late flourish as Mumbai Indians posted 176 for six.
