Murder plan foiled as alert man grabs machete, hacks gang in Tirumullaivoyal

-

CHENNAI: A gang’s attempt to hack a man to death over previous enmity went awry after the latter overpowered one of the attackers, snatched the machete he was carrying and hacked the leader of the gang. The dramatic visual of the incident that happened on Monday evening at Ayapakkam, captured by CCTV cameras in the locality, went viral on Tuesday.

The incident happened on the crowded 1st Main Road on Monday evening. According to the police, MM Murthy (45) of Ayapakkam, an AIADMK union deputy secretary and former councillor, had previous enmity with one Prabakaran as he bailed out a person who recently attacked the latter. To seek revenge, Prabakaran and his friends hatched a plan to murder Murthy.

On Monday evening, minutes before the attack, the gang visited Murthy’s house on the pretext of giving wedding invitation to make sure that he was at home. They then waited a few metres away for him to come out.

As he was walking on the crowded road, they started moving towards him. But when one of the assailants attacked him from behind, Murthy realised his life was in danger. Before the others could surround him, he staged a counterattack and snatched the machete from one of them.

Startled by the turn of events, the attackers fled in different directions. But Murthy chased Prabakaran and quickly caught up with him. He then rained a series of blows with the weapon, and Prabakaran collapsed on the road.

The CCTV footage shows passers-by shocked by what unfolded in front of them. Some of them are seen coming closer to speak to Murthy who is seen nursing a bleeding injury to his head.

On information, a team from Tirumullaivoyal police station rushed to the spot and took Prabakaran to Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital where he is undergoing treatment with grievous injuries. Officials said he sustained injuries on his shoulder and nose and has been admitted to a private hospital.

The Tirumullaivoyal police registered a case and secured three suspects, S Vijayabaskar (23), M Muthu (23) and S Raju (19) of Ayapakkam, who are being remanded in Custody. Official sources said Murthy may not be booked for attacking Prabakaran and others as he attacked them in self-defence.
