Travel e-registration: Chaos rules city roads
City police’s overnight decision to impose sector-wise and police station jurisdiction wise restriction for the public for travelling in Chennai beyond 10 am, as part of measures to make the public adhere to the lockdown norms, turned chaotic as motorists were shocked by cops seeking e-registration details on city roads.
The majority of motorists were not even aware of the e-registration process requirement mandated by the city police and it led to unpleasant scenes at almost every vehicle checkpoint erected by the police on the roads.
Those who are travelling from one neighbourhood to another should e-register their details on the government portal and those who fail to will not be allowed to travel after 10 am, a late Monday night release from Chennai police said. Except for medical emergency and other emergency, people will not be allowed to travel around without e-registration at , police said.
Those who are not following the e-registration norms will have to face legal action, said the release issued by Chennai City Commissioner of Police, Shankar Jiwal.
The city is divided into 12 police districts and 348 sectors. There will be a border check post for vehicles within the 12 police districts in the city. Apart from that, there will be another 153 vehicle checkpoints on roads to monitor station borders and junctions.
People are allowed to travel between 6 am to 10 am only in the same neighbourhood that too only to buy essentials, police reminded the public. There are 181 containment zones in the city and no resident will be allowed to step out of these zones, police noted. Steps are being taken to provide essential items in each containment zone, police added. There are as many as 309 four-wheeled patrol vehicles and 205 bike patrols that are roaming in the city.
Wearing masks and maintenance of social distance are also a must when people step out, police said.
