4 women workers killed, 10 injured in van-tanker lorry collision in Thoothukudi
Four women were killed and ten others injured in an accident which occurred near Sillanatham in Thoothukudi on Thursday morning in a van-tanker lorry collision.
The ill-fated women were workers travelling by the van that collided head on under the Puthiyamputhur police limits. They were traveling for work to a private company located at Thoothukudi, sources said.
Thoothukudi Superintendent of Police S Jeyakumar inspected the spot and held inquiries. After inquiring, the SP said the van driver was at fault and it ultimately ended in collision. While two women succumbed to injuries on the spot, two others died on the way to hospital. Those injured were admitted to Thoothukudi Government Medical College Hospital.
The accident occurred at 6 am, and the ill-fated victims were from Ottapidaram and its surrounding areas, the SP added. Vehicular traffic was affected until the accident site was cleared with the aid of earthmover.
The deceased were identified as Selvarani (45), wife of Ganesan, Sillanatham, Kamatchi alias Jothi (40), wife of Ravindran from Muppilivetti, Sandhya (48), wife of Arumugam of the same locality and A Manimekalai (20) of Naduvakurichi Colony. The condition of an injured victim identified as Ramalakshmi is said to be critical, sources said. Based on a complaint, Puthiyamputhur police have filed a case against S Pandaram (41), van driver from Nainarpuram and seized the vehicle, sources said.
