The Narcotics Control Bureau noted that the heavy rain and cyclone alert in Chennai and Andhra Pradesh have not deterred ganja traffickers

CHENNAI: Sleuths from Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on Saturday seized 212.5 kg of ganja from a lorry near Pallikonda toll plaza on Vellore-Krishnagiri road and arrested four persons from Erode district.

According to the agency, officers of the Chennai Zonal Unit intercepted the vehicle based on specific inputs. There were two persons in the vehicles, both residents of Erode. A thorough search of the lorry resulted in the recovery of over 212.5 kg of ganja, which was concealed beneath coconut saplings.

The officers learnt that the persons who actually bought the contraband were escorting the lorry, and immediately proceeded to nab them. Finally, after a high-speed chase, they intercepted the SUV and secured two more persons, also residents of Erode, who had bought the contraband from Andhra Pradesh. They were taking the ganja to Erode for retail sale, said the NCB in a press release.

The agency noted that the heavy rain and cyclone alert in Chennai and Andhra Pradesh have not deterred ganja traffickers, who are defying all odds and taking all types of risks to procure and traffic the contraband.

In another operation on November 16, officers of NCB, Cochin Sub Zone, intercepted a parcel at Thiruvananthapuram. From the outside, the gift parcel contained chewing gum and Lotte Choco Pie. However, when examined carefully, they found 244 gm of amphetamine, 25 LSD stamps and 2 gm of methaqualone, all coming under the psychotropic drugs category concealed inside. It was packed in such a way that it was very difficult to detect the contraband, the bureau said.

Immediate follow-up action based on field inputs resulted in the identification and apprehension of the actual receiver located in Thiruvananthapuram.

Meanwhile, the NCB Bengaluru team seized 40 gm of methamphetamine from a courier parcel at Bengaluru on November 11. The parcel was destined for Thiruvananthapuram. A controlled delivery of this seizure resulted in the apprehension of the actual receiver of the parcel at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, the press note added.
