CM urges Guv to send NEET Bill for Prez’s nod at once
The Opposition AIADMK has been criticising the ruling party for achieving little on the issue since the passage of the Bill in the Assembly
CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin, on Saturday, met Governor RN Ravi and urged him to immediately send the legislation passed by the State Assembly seeking TN’s exemption from NEET for the President’s assent.
An official statement from the government said, “Considering the uniqueness of the impact (of NEET) on medical admission in Tamil Nadu, the Chief Minister today (November 27) personally met the Governor and urged him to immediately send the Bill passed by the Assembly to the President for getting his assent soon.”
Stalin met the Governor in the backdrop of the Opposition criticising the ruling DMK for achieving little on the NEET issue since the passage of the Bill in the State Assembly in August last. The Assembly had passed the Tamil Nadu Admission to Undergraduate Medical Degree Courses Bill 2021 seeking to provide exemption to TN from NEET in UG medical admission on August 13, 2021. The NEET is not a fair or equitable method of admission since it favoured the rich and elite sections of society, according to the Bill’s preamble. The Bill was subsequently forwarded to the Governor to get the assent of the President.
The State government passed the Bill based on the recommendation of the Justice AK Rajan committee, which proposed alternate admission methods to the government to eliminate the adverse impact of NEET on socially backward rural and poor urban students in the state, after eliciting views of various sections and data pertaining to medical admission in Tamil Nadu.
The Chief Minister was accompanied by Water Resources Minister Duraimurugan, Health Minister Ma Subramanian and top government officials, an official release here said.
