-

Two lorry drivers, allegedly being harassed by three drunk men on Red Hills, drove the truck in reverse over them, killing two on the spot on Thursday night.

Police said the trio had demanded money from the lorry crew and later damaged the headlight of the truck which led to the accused running over the vehicle over them. Police identified the deceased as Kumaran, 36 and Kamala Kannan, 35 from Red Hills while Naveen, 26, the third man, is admitted to Stanley Government Hospital. The trio were drinking since 3pm at a private truck parking space in Vadaperumbakkam near Red Hills. The accused were identified as Kanhaiya Lal Singh, 35, and Krish Kumar, 26 from Uttar Pradesh.

“Around 7.30pm, drivers reached the spot in a truck. The trio noticed Kanhaiya Singh counting cash and demanded that he give them the money. When Singh denied, the trio damaged the headlight of the truck,” a police officer said. The three continued to argue with the truck drivers and were allegedly beaten up. Meanwhile, Kanhaiya tried driving away around 8:30 pm but Kumaran kept saying they couldn’t leave without paying up and after a while Kanhaiya reversed the truck and ran over the group,” an officer said.

The Red Hills police registered a case under Section 304 (a) IPC (Causing death due to negligence). Kanhaiya Singh and Krish Kumar who initially escaped were later arrested and remanded in judicial custody. The incident led to the relatives of the deceased reaching the area and damaging trucks by pelting stones.
