Ensure vertical, horizontal clearance between bldgs, power lines: Tangedco

-

Tangedco has instructed its field officials to ensure that buildings adhere to the vertical and horizontal clearances between overhead power lines and other structures while giving new service connections. This is to avoid accidents by contact.

“Every year, people at work are losing their lives or are seriously injured when they come into contact with live overhead lines. These incidents often occur during construction of buildings underneath power lines, inadequate clearance between buildings and power lines and during work activities,” said a memo issued by Chief Engineer (Distribution) Madurai Region.

It said the utility is committed to providing a safe working place and environment to its employees and other stakeholders. “Safety in work should be the motto for all employees. This will be achieved by approaches, which focus on people, supported by demonstrated leadership and employee commitment at all levels,” it said.

Pointing to the non-departmental fatal accidents or incidents that occurred during the building construction site due to inadequate clearance, the CE’s memo said one of the biggest problems is that people simply do not notice the overhead lines when they are tired, and the lines are difficult to spot in foggy or dull conditions.

“Hence, SEs are instructed to direct the section officers to credit awareness among the masons, electricians, painters, wiring contractors and other skilled workers on how to work safely during building construction and other related works.

“Preventing overhead line contract accidents needs planning and consultation with interested parties before and during any work close to overhead lines,” it added.
