Poor catch brings down prices on day 1 after ban period at Kasimedu market

-

After the 61-day annual fishing ban, Kasimedu fish market welcomed a huge crowd of seafood lovers. Though 70% trawlers ventured into the sea, the catch was less, which led to a dip in the prices after more than two months.

“The annual ban period ended on Wednesday, both fibre and mechanised boats went for catch. Only fibre boats returned on Sunday with just about 10 tonnes of fish, instead of the usual 30 tonnes. But thankfully, despite a fall in supply, prices had reduced compared to previous weeks,” observed M Raja, a fisherman at Kasimedu fishing harbour.

Those with mechanised boats are expected to bring more fish than usual after 15 days. “So, the rates will decrease further and remain stable until there’s a shortage in supply,” added Raja.

Additionally, with the annual ban going on in Kerala, supply of seafood would be from Kasimedu market for the next two months. Meanwhile, during the annual fishing ban, the State government gives Rs 5,000 for fishermen. But this year, out of 100 fishermen families, only 40 received the subsidy money.

“The government stated that due to lack of money, they could not provide during the ban period. However, it assured the remaining fishermen not experienced such situations previously. During the election manifesto they promised to increase the subsidy from Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000 but it hasn’t yet happened,” pointed out T Mukesh, a fisherman at Kasimedu.

However, the Indian Fishermen Association has demanded an increase in the subsidy amount to Rs 15,000 during the annual ban.

“Also, as the boats are not used for 2 months, the particles are rusted. We urge the government to provide at least Rs 3 lakh to cover maintenance charges,” said MD Dayala, president of the association.

Additionally, they want the government to pay their children’s school and college fees, as the ban period, which is before the academic year begins, prevents them a livelihood.
