Man hurls acid on ex-wife held for theft in Kovai court

COIMBATORE: A 35-yearold woman is battling for life after her husband emptied a bottle of acid on her inside the combined court complex here on Thursday.

The victim, S Kavitha, 35 suffered more than 80 per cent burns and is undergoing treatment in critical condition at Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH). Soon after the outrageous incident, the accused P Sivakumar, 42, a truck driver from Mahalakshm­i Nagar at Kannampala­yam near Sulur was thrashed by advocates.

However, the accused managed to give them a slip and was nabbed in a short while by a woman cop after a chase. Police said Kavitha came to appear for trial in a chain-lifting case in August 2016. She was arrested for stealing a 10-sovereign chain from a passenger on a bus in RS Puram police station limits.

Police said Sivakumar was upset with his wife as she recently ditched him and her two daughters to elope with another man.

“As he was unable to find her out, Sivakumar came to the court knowing that she would come for trial in the theft case. He broke into a quarrel near the judicial magistrate court – II and insisted that she go with him. However, she stoutly refused. He then hurled acid kept in a water bottle on his wife,” police said.

Writhing in pain, Kavitha collapsed and was immediatel­y rushed to CMCH. When Sivakumar tried to escape, the advocates thrashed him however he managed to give them a slip. By then, head constable M Indumathi attached to Anamalai police station along with a few other cops chased and nabbed him from near Government Arts College Road.

Superinten­dent of Police V Badrinaray­anan presented Indumathi with a cash reward in recognitio­n of her act of bravery.
