Cong MLAs to stage night-long protest in House today

CHENNAI: Condemning the disqualifi­cation of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi as Member of Parliament, Congress MLAs in Tamil Nadu has decided to stage a sit-in protest inside the state Assembly on Monday night.

K Selvaperun­thagai, Congress floor leader in the Assembly, told reporters that Congress MLAs will wear black attire and participat­e in the proceeding of ongoing budget session on the day.

“We will hold placards saying #StandWithR­ahul and stage sit in protest by staying in the Assembly throughout the night to show our opposition,” he said.

He added that the party will move a special resolution in the Assembly to prevent murder of democracy.

Hunger strike

On Sunday, cadre of Congress party conducted hunger strikes at various places and also in front of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s memorial in Sriperumbu­dur condemning the disqualifi­cation of Rahul Gandhi.

TNCC president KS Alagiri, who led the protest in Cuddalore termed Rahul’s disqualifi­cation an act of injustice and political vendetta.

The disqualifi­cation is a deliberate attempt to avoid him from raking up Adani issue inside Parliament.Alagiri said there would be more protests including rail roko and street-corner propaganda meetings to make it a people’s movement against the ‘autocratic’ Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Centre.

Protest fast in Puducherry today

Meanwhile, the Puducherry Pradesh Congress Committee will hold a dawn to dusk fast on Monday.

Former Puducherry chief minister and senior Congress leader V Narayanasa­my told participan­ts in a protest rally organised by the PPCC here on Sunday that, “the disqualifi­cation of Rahul Gandhi is a clear case of political vendetta unleashed by the BJP heading NDA government at the Centre.”

Rahul was convicted and sentenced to two years in jail by a Surat Court on March 23 in a 2019 criminal defamation case over his “Modi surname” remark.

A day later, the Lok Sabha Secretaria­t in a notificati­on said that his disqualifi­cation was effective from the day of his conviction.
