Class 12 students to get Rs 10,000 for each centum in board exam

CHENNAI: Chennai Mayor R Priya on Monday announced several betterment schemes to improve the quality of education in Chennai Corporatio­n schools.

She also revised the price incentives for students who score centum in Class 12 Board exams from Rs 1,000 to Rs 10,000.

“If students in corporatio­n schools scored centum in a subject, they’ll be awarded Rs 10,000 for each subject,” said the Mayor. “For this scheme, Rs 10 lakh will be allocated, and separate guidelines will be given.”

She also announced that labs in all corporatio­n high schools and higher secondary schools will be developed. “On priority basis, 10 higher secondary schools have been selected in the first phase along with the allocation of Rs 2 crore,” she explained.

“Likewise, incentive for teachers who give 100% results will be hiked from Rs 1,500 to Rs 3,000.”

The Public Address System (PAS) will contact all units in a school and make key announceme­nts by headmaster­s in corporatio­n schools. “In the first phase, Rs 35 lakh will be spent to set up 70 PAS in higher and higher secondary schools. Gradually, this scheme will be implemente­d to all the corporatio­n schools,” pointed out Priya.

Further, she announced Rs 45 crore to renovate damaged roofs in schools. Out of this, Rs 15 crore to be spent on maintenanc­e of the newly incorporat­ed 139 schools from school education to corporatio­n. Retrofitti­ng of roofs and school building maintenanc­e will be carried out for Rs 25 crores. The remaining will be spent on sanitation works through workers of National Urban Livelihood­s Mission.

“Morning prayers that take place twice a week will be conducted in English. Every student will get an opportunit­y in a rotation to develop their language skills and leadership quality,” explained Mayor Priya. “Every English teacher must select 2 students in each period and make them give a speech on general topics for 2 minutes.”

Class 11 students at corporatio­n schools will be taken out on industrial visits for their career guidance after schooling. “For this, Rs 11 lakh will be allocated,” she pointed out.
