McTominay helps Scotland beat Spain

-

GLASGOW: Scott McTominay scored a brace as Scotland defeated a much-changed Spain side 2-0 in the Euro 2024 qualifier at Hampden Park on Tuesday and maintained its perfect start to the campaign.

Scotland notched up its first win over its Iberian opponent since 1984 and ensured it stayed on top of Group A with six points while the second-placed Spain has three points. McTominay had scored twice off the bench in a 3-0 win over Cyprus on Saturday and was the catalyst for what will go down as a famous win.

New Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente made eight changes from the side that beat Norway 3-0 in Malaga at the weekend. It showed as the away team battled to get any sustained momentum and the host pressed it into numerous errors.

For the first goal in the seventh minute, McTominay profited from a Pedro Porro slip after Andy Robertson

picked up possession in the box and played the ball into his path. He then got on the end of a cross from Kieran Tierney in the 51st minute.

De la Fuente handed a first start to 33-year-old striker Joselu and the latter hit the crossbar with a header midway through the opening period.

RESULTS: Scotland 2 (S McTominay 7 & 51) bt Spain 0; Turkey 0 lost to Croatia 2 (M Kovacic 20 & 45)
