2 ultras killed, 2 Army men hurt as gunfight rages in Baramulla

SRINAGAR: Two terrorists were killed while as many Army personnel got injured on Friday as a gunbattle between the militants and security forces continued for the second day in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district, officials said.

The encounter began on Thursday at Check Mohalla Nowpora in the Sopore area, north Kashmir. After the night’s lull, a fresh exchange of firing took place on Friday morning.

Two terrorists have been killed so far, according to the officials. Two army personnel injured in the gunfight have been shifted to a hospital for treatment, they said.

The operation to flush out the terrorists from the area is underway , they added. A civilian was also hit by a bullet during the encounter, officials said.

Police said, acting on a specific intelligen­ce input, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by the police, army, and CRPF in the area.

However, no official word on the casualties so far. The identity and affiliatio­n of the slain could not be establishe­d immediatel­y. In the wake of the operation, the authoritie­s suspended classwork in various educationa­l institutio­ns on Friday.

Additional Deputy Commission­er, Sopore Shabir Ahmad Raina, said as a precaution­ary measure, class work in all schools and colleges was suspended for Friday in the entire Tehsil. This was the second gun battle since Wednesday in Kashmir. Militants and security forces on Wednesday morning exchanged fire for a brief period in Bandipora district of north Kashmir that left two soldiers wounded.
