Morse code or international telegraphic code is an internationally accepted code that is used to transmit textual information as a series of dots and dashes. In Morse code, DIT denotes a dot and DAH a dash. The code was originally created by Samuel Morse. It can encode Roman alphabets ( A through Z), Arabic numerals ( 0 through 9) and a small set of punctuation and procedural signals. It is a widely accepted code that can accommodate nonRoman characters too.
Applications of Morse code
Morse code is used in aviation, amateur radio, ‘ Save Our Souls’ ( SOS) signalling for general use, assistive technology for the disabled, etc.
HAM radio. Home amateur (HAM) radio is a special licensed radio service that is generally used to send and receive information where no other signal can penetrate. This signalling system uses satellites to send and receive distress signals. Morse code is also used in this sort of communication.
SOS signalling. SOS is a distress signal that is used by sailors to indicate that they need help. The SOS signal is also derived from Morse code as the code for letters ‘SOS’ (...--...) is simple and easy to understand. This has now been replaced with global maritime distress and safety system.
