Marc Marquez continues his love affair with the Sachsenrin­g

SSEVEN YEARS IN A ROW, the German Sachsenrin­g circuit has witnessed a Spaniard by the name of Marc Marquez win the race, albeit in different classes. You may say that the track favours him and his Repsol Honda, but the victory this year came through due to some clever pit strategies and the mature riding. At one point it seemed he had lost his German GP mojo and might also lose the big lead he built in the championsh­ip, but ultimately he came through to claim maximum points from the weekend.

Marquez set a blitzing lap in qualifying to claim pole on Saturday where the conditions were perfect to go racing. Hector Barbera surprised the entire paddock by lining up behind Marquez on his Ducati GP14 with Valentino Rossi just behind. The Sachsenrin­g is known to favour the Hondas as the last nonHonda win at the circuit came in 2009 with Rossi astride the Yamaha. Hence Rossi knew he was going to have a tough time in the race.

Danilo Petrucci headed row two from Pol Espargaro and Maverick Vinales while Andrea Dovizioso, Aleix Espargaro and Andrea Iannone brought up the third row. Dani Pedrosa completed the top ten as Jorge Lorenzo had yet another disastrous qualifying performanc­e ending up eleventh.

While Saturday may have been bright and sunny, riders knew the weather forecast for Sunday was far from that. And so it was. The preceding races did have a cloud burst, but by the time the big boys came out there was no precipitat­ion, though the track was still fairly damp.

Rossi got a great start, quite unique for him in recent times, as he dove in to the first corner inside Marquez. Marquez ran wide and allowed Dovizioso to pass through as well. Petrucci and Marquez jostled for third with the Italian making a move stick as he saw the leading duo starting to stretch out in the front.
