WHILE INDIA’S ASPIRATIONS TO become a global superpower are still some years away from becoming a reality, in one area at least we can lay claim to that title. Without a shred of doubt, India is one of the world’s largest and also fastest growing automobile markets. Like the year 2015, the year 2016 also saw manufacturers launching multiple products spread across price segments, body styles, engine options, variants and trim levels. Manufacturers across the board reported growth month after month and the outlook remained positive throughout the automotive industry even as it looked forward to the introduction of the long-awaited Goods and Services Tax (GST) by the Government of India.

Times Auto Awards in partnership with evo India and Fast Bikes India, which is now in its ninth year, seeks to recognise the best of this rapidly growing industry. To win this most prestigious and coveted of awards, the game that manufacturers have to play is one of pushing boundaries and exceeding expectations. Like each of the years that have gone by, this year too an elite jury was burdened with the onerous task of sorting this year’s best from the rest over three days of exhaustive evaluation at the Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore. With no less than 41 four-wheelers spread across segments and body styles, the jury had its task cut out. At the end, only the winners remained with their heads above the crowd.
