HERO SUPER SPLENDOR
How ‘super’ is the 2018 Super Splendor? We find out
Can this 125cc Hero give the Honda Shine a tough time?
WWhat is it? Launched back in 2005, the Super Splendor wasn’t really one of the bestselling 125cc motorcycles in the country. But it was appreciated due to its genial behaviour. To kick-start and pump the numbers up, Hero has updated the motorcycle and invited us to test it out.
All new?
The Super Splendor looks identical to its predecessor; however it’s the rear portion which receives a redo. The boxy tail lamp has been swept up, handlebars are now matte black and the cosmetics get a minor touch up, giving the motorcycle a fresher output. It’s all balanced out with a sprinkle of chrome. The engine is now a non-sloper 124.7cc single, as seen on the Glamour.
Fun to ride?
Surprisingly, yes! The new motor gives the motorcycle a bump of almost 2bhp when compared to its predecessor. The bike now feels effortless, smooth, and eager to pull. Refinement levels have gone up too. Vibrations are only felt once you cross 70kmph. Footpegs are positioned neither too forward nor too backward and the upright riding position makes daily commutes easy and hassle-free.
The four-speed gearbox shifts fairly well, which is why filtering through traffic is a breeze on the Super Splendor. Talking about traffic, the clutch pull is effortless. This is a boon to have when stuck in a jam (which we mostly are). Corners too are tackled well and the tyres also seem fine for daily commutes. The Super Splendor is essentially a bike that goes about its duties without a fuss.
So all good?
Well, no. A huge disappointment is that disc brakes aren’t given even as an option on the Super Splendor. Braking, however, is progressive but you still yearn for the bite of a disc set up.
Efficient?
We did not get the chance to test out the mileage. But we could expect around 55kmpl. Add to that a tank of 13-litres, and you have an effective range of more than 700 kilometres. Phenomenal!
Pricing?
The motorcycle hasn’t been launched yet, but the cost cutting measures should place the Super Splendor around the `57,000 mark, putting it in the vicinity of Honda CB Shine and Bajaj Discover 125.
