AS MARKET EVOLVES WE SHALL INTRODUCE MORE GTI CARLINES
As director for Volkswagen passenger cars in India, Steffen Knapp is at the forefront of driving the GTI story
How important is GTI and motorsport to VW India?
Performance has been the backbone of our brand and it has been our constant endeavour to provide the Indian market an opportunity to experience the best of Volkswagen. Globally and in India, Volkswagen Motorsports is our brand ambassador for showcasing our sporty carlines, that is the GTI family. To further promote this sport locally across tier II and III markets, the Ameo Cup cars are part of the 250+ city Ameo roadshow covering 30,000km across India. Consumers will be given the opportunity to touch and feel the Ameo Cup car which carries the heart of the Polo GTI – a 1.8 TSI engine.
What was the response to the Polo GTI?
The Polo GTI in India received an astounding response from our performance driven enthusiasts and we quickly achieved the targeted numbers for this region. However, the market is still at a nascent stage towards purchasing performance oriented cars in the hatchback segment. The Indian market is slowly developing an affinity towards cars that are driven by performance and enhanced driving pleasures instead of choosing mere convenience.
Among the Up, Polo and Golf GTI what will come to India?
We’re currently evaluating the market and consumer needs to bring the perfect performance machine at the right price point in which, driving pleasure is guaranteed.
What is the contribution of the Polo GT to volumes?
Together, the GT (TDI and TSI) versions contribute 40 per cent to the sales of our best-selling carline – the Polo, in India. The Polo GT carlines stand for a certain respect that gives consumers the adrenaline rush, which truly enhances their driving experience. We’re happy retaining this experience to our Polo portfolio for now.
