“AMG has grown dramatically last year, by an average of 54 per cent in India, including our dream car line-up”

Says Matthias Luhrs, head, overseas region, Mercedes-Benz cars

“AMG is one of the brands that has grown dramatically last year by an average of 54 per cent that includes dream cars and we will continue to bring more models in India. I am not in a position to confirm [which ones] as of now, but we will bring more vehicles, let’s see since the market is there and we will push on the AMGs.

“It [big V8s] is not a contradiction since we hit the record last year. We have big plans [for AMG] with or without electric and we have done it [electrification] in the past with the SLS, as the first electric sports car. It was only 100 units but we have done it so we have experience in AMG electric cars, that too before everyone else did it, even before Tesla by the way. And we are now working on the electrification game also in AMG but I cannot reveal more now since it is a secret but we are working on the electrification of the AMG range.

“In terms of [AMG] power outputs, at the moment I can tell you that we do not have any plan to go further down but you never know what happens in three or four years, we have been studying the market worldwide, who would have known ten years ago that now everybody talks about electrification whether we like it or not but the fact is everybody is looking at it and it seems to be for many markets and at the moment it is the way to go and we are also keen on showing our expertise and know-how in the electrification game.

“Whether we are going to assemble [AMG] in India, we are studying, we are analysing. If the business case will be positive in the sense we can sell a couple of thousand units, sure why not, but we have not determined at the moment.”
