Rocketman on board Elon Musk’s Tesla has registered an office in Bengaluru and has appointed three directors to take charge
TESLA’S GLOBAL EV OFFENSIVE has played a monumental role in popularising electric cars. Thanks to quirky designs, autonomous driving capabilities and spine-tingling performance, the Model S, 3, X and Y quartet have garnered a big fanbase in India as well. And they finally have reason to rejoice as the carmaker has set up a subsidiary under the name Tesla Motors India and Energy Pvt Ltd in Bengaluru.
The American EV giant has also announced three directors to take charge of the brand’s India operations — Vaibhav Taneja, Venkatrangam Sreeram and David Jon Feinstein. Even though there’s no official word from Tesla yet, Elon Musk responded to enthusiasts saying that the brand will make it to India “definitely this year”. Although we await many more details, especially with regard to its first launch, manufacturing and viability of Tesla’s autonomous features in India.
We’re expecting the first Tesla to arrive in India to be the Model 3, but the Model Y with its crossover design and higher ground clearance also makes sense for our poor road conditions. That said, even though Tesla’s first concrete step in India is a welcome move, there’s still a long way to go for the country in terms of creating friendlier EV policies and establishing a robust charging network.
