Diesel Black Gold’s creative bastion, SOFIA KOKOSALAKI, speaks to Bazaar as the brand opens its FIRST-EVER standalone menswear store in India

Known for her sophistica­ted drapery and feminine designs, Sofia Kokosalaki took over Diesel Black Gold in 2009, and has since then redefined the denim brand with her übercool, covetable designs. Now every man can get his own denim fix as Black Gold opens its very first standalone flagship in the world, and that too at the country’s most fashionabl­e pitstop, DLF Emporio, in New Delhi.

What is your design philiosoph­y for Diesel Black Gold?

Diesel Black Gold is the premium expression of Diesel. The principles of a rock and roll and irreverent attitude are the same, but the expression of the product is more luxurious and chic, contempora­ry and trend-centric.

You are known for your Grecian drapes and feminine designs. What are the kind of challenges you faced while taking over the brand?

It has been more fun than challengin­g. I have enjoyed taking on the more corporate responsibi­lities that come with the job and my drapes have been very handy indeed, as most customers love a blend of rock-chic and soft femininity.

Who is the Diesel Black Gold man?

Someone with a rockstar attitude and great appreciati­on for craftsmans­hip.

Who in India defines the Diesel Black Gold philosophy?

Amongst the men, Shah Rukh Khan is the coolest. And amongst the girls, Freida Pinto is extremely chic.

When can we expect to see your wonderful womenswear in India?

With the right demand and opportunit­y, it should be very soon.

Can we expect to see an India-inspired collection anytime soon?

I love Indian culture, its wealth of beauty and tradition, so perhaps for my own line, Sofia Kokosalaki, I might. But for Diesel Black Gold what I tend to do is keep the inspiratio­n very urban.

What’s next for you?

I am eagerly awaiting the launch of my bridal and jewellery line, on www.net-a-porter.com this month, and also my collection for www. asos.com, which will be a younger, ethical line called Kore Sofia Kokosalaki.
