suneet varma’S St PeterSburg
The designer enjoyed the city’s mix of old-world charm and modern lifestyle
WHY ST PETERSBURG? The five days I spent in St Petersburg were a precious gift. I had a very different image of Russia, contrary to its welcoming people, old and new architecture, and vibrant mix of tradition and modernity. It was unlike any city I had visited before. A TYPICAL DAY While on holiday, I firmly believe in ‘early to bed and early to rise’, so I can get the most out of my day. The Neva River divides the city and my day would begin with a walk to the river to have breakfast, which was usually a croissant, coffee, and fruit. Thereafter, I would consult my self-compiled must-see list and walk around the whole day. The city is steeped in history—divine museums, cathedrals, palaces, theatres, and much more. STANDOUT RESTAURANTS St. Petersburg is famous for its caviar bars, where you can sample different varieties of Russia’s most famous delicacy. Dom was a hip bar that I visited one night and would highly recommend (tel: +7 812 975 5599).
Restaurant Da Vinci, located in the heart of the city, also comes to mind (www. davinci.spb.ru; tel: +7 812 315 9334)
SHOP TILL YOU DROP
There were fur stoles selling everywhere and I bought a gorgeous, brown fox hair stole. I also collect first-edition books, especially those with hand-written notes. I picked up many, as well as some beautiful textiles from the flea markets in St Petersburg. ON THE FUN SIDE St Petersburg is still very old-world, and rightly called the Venice of the North, for its labyrinth of canals—I often took a boat ride down these. I was also lucky to catch the Fabergé Egg collection at the Hermitage Museum. STAY HOTSPOT Located on the banks of the Fontanka River, Rossi Hotel was constructed in 1870. With gorgeous views, this carefully restored historical landmark is now a boutique hotel (www.rossihotels.com; tel: +7 812 635 6333). IN YOUR BAG It is freezing in St Petersburg, even in the summers, so I would certainly carry a warm coat, muffler, and an Indian shawl. Sturdy shoes are a must, and I usually carry my pair from Prada or Tod’s. And of course, a good sketch book.
