THE FUTURE OF BEAUTY

Gear up for a new chapter in beauty, as Bazaar lists the innovations that will resound in 2014

The Paraben Alternative

Preservation in cosmetics is a necessary evil, which is why parabens are still being used in cosmetics despite their carcinogenic effects. A new preservative, however, promises to turn the tide. Switzerland- based manufacturer of sustainable chemicals, Clariant has just launched their new blend called Nipaguard Zero. Made from renewable and natural materials, these compounds provide protection against bacteria and other cosmetic spoilers, keeping the ingredients intact without any harmful side effects. Launched in October 2013, they are still being formulated into cosmetics, but look out for Phenonip®, Nipagin®, and Nipaguard on the ingredients list.

The Stocky New Brush

Traditional makeup and mascara brushes are made with longer bristles that are harder to control. Shorter, stiffer bristles give more grip, the same way that a pencil would over a paintbrush. Makeup artists have already given a nod to these shorter brushes in the last few years by adopting the kabuki brush over traditional versions to buff powder and blush into the skin. M.A.C’s new Masterclass brush collection (`1,560 onwards) looks exactly like a set of toothbrushes and comes in various sizes to cover the lids, brows, and cheeks. Avon’s Mega Effect Mascara (`630 approx) will change the way you wear it—the fat, short comb can be used flat to suit the shape of the eye, or sideways to get into the corners of the lashes, making your eyes look lightly lined.

The Botox Extender

When someone claims they’ve found the natural replacement to botox, you have to sit up and take notice. Aaranya’s Energy Enhancing night cream (`695) is made with extracts of okra that is the key ingredient, and helps “reduce the need or extend the time between Botox procedures,” says Dr PR Singh, co-founder and R&D head of Aaranya. Botox replacements are hotting up the global beauty circuit with two new

ingredients. Argireline is a new synthetic peptide that works to relax the muscles and smooth wrinkles. It’s available in Devita Perfecting Time

Age Defying Moisturizer with Argireline (`1,200 approx). But the real discovery is the MG6P molecule

(called Neodermal) which is the winner of the Innovation Zone Best Ingredient Award 2013. It’s mixed with amino acids and copper, and supposedly gives the effect of one

injection in just two weeks.

The Natural Protection

Why create something unnatural when you can simply mimic nature? That seems to be the thought behind the world’s first fullynatural super sunscreen created by CSIRO (Australia’s natural science agency) in collaboration with Larissa Bright Australia. It is made with compounds that the algae (living within the corals) secrete, which in turn protects both the algae and the coral from the sun. In fact, even the fish that feed on these algae get sun protection because of this compound, which is a type of amino acid. What’s more, these new filters are UVA- and UVB-resistant, clear, odourless, and stable, which means that they can be mixed into any cream. Plus, they do not contain any synthetic additives that are used in popular sunscreens.

The Hair Revolution

Vivid colours on hair were the highlights at Givenchy’s Fall 2013 show and Chanel’s 2013 Cruise Collection. The old rinse-out options have literally been a washout because of weak, limpid tints, and if you want a temporary pastel pop shade like the ones shown on the runways, you may feel like you’ve run out of options. But L’Oréal Professionnel’s latest offering promises intense colour that lasts only two washes. In eight hues that range from a brilliant green to fuchsia to understated browns, this is the new way to wear colour. And if the product has you breaking out in hives, you’ll love Wella’s new Salon Professional. It’s made with the patented ME+molecule that gives the same glossy colour but without the most common triggers for allergies.
