From Paris, With Love
In 2003, Aurélie Bidermann took a trip to India. It inspired her so much she launched a jewellery line. Almost 11 years later, the Parisian jewellery designer has debuted her accessories at Le Mill, Mumbai—a homecoming if you will. In the intervening decade, she has built her brand into one of fashion’s most wanted.Shemadethefriendshipbraceletchicagain with her version Do Brasil, an 18k gold-plated link bracelet, intertwined with coloured thread. Her designs have been spotted on the rock and the chic, from Gwyneth Paltrow to Beyoncé and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers (yes, she has a men’s range).
Her collection at Le Mill though is only for women at the moment, and showcases select pieces from her collections that are part of the brand’s DNA. The lace cuff is one such. Originally crafted with real lace dipped in gold (so every piece was unique), the technique changed over time because the end product was too fragile. Today, the lace cuff is an example of what makes Aurélie Bidermann designs so covetable: A combination of age-old traditions with a modern twist.
The designer, who lives between Paris and New York, draws inspiration from different cultures that she has been exposed to through her travels. Her latest collection, Cruise 2014, reflects tribal Indian influences, such as in the 18k gold Monteroso necklace which features turquoise cotton thread and resin coral pimento. Other pieces are similar in style or inspired by nature, such as the intricately patterned Lily Pad earrings. For the future, Bidermann is excited about using bakelite, an early form of plastic. “It’s an amazing material; you can have all the colours,” she says. For now though, we are happy to have a piece of true Parisian style bijoux.
