What were you like at five? A fashion icon—my mum dressed me in hot pants. Who’s on your A-List? My wife, my son, photographer Richard Avedon, Nelson Mandela, and the editor of mrporter.com, Jeremy Langmead.
What’s your secret past? I was nicknamed ‘Jesus’. I looked like something you would find on a Christmas card—long hair and a beard. Dubai-based makeup artist CAROLYN GALLYER has worked with the Arabia editions of Marie Claire and Harper’s Bazaar. For this issue, she wields her brush on ‘Pleats & Ruffles’ (pg 236) and ‘Crop Tops’ (pg 250).
What were you like at five? As the only girl in the family, there was no choice but to hang out with the boys. That meant no dresses and playing in the dirt. Who’s on your A-List? Makeup artists Pat McGrath and Val Garland.
What’s your secret past? I like extreme sports. In her 17-year long career, PAYAL PURI has been the editor of Cosmopolitan India, conceptualised websites, and scripted TV shows. She enters the fashionable life of designer Jade Jagger in ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ (pg 152).
What were you like at five? I spoke, slept, ate, and chewed my nails too much. Who’s on your A-List? Robert de Niro, Joan Didion, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and Meryl Streep.
What’s your secret past? I am a middle-of-the-night cook—I often get a manic urge to bake at 2:00 a.m. A Bazaar India alumna, SONAM CHAWLA is a self-confessed old-digger, currently based out of New York. She shoots and interviews Miss USA 2014 Nina Davuluri in ‘Jewel in the Crown’ (pg 165) and puts together the fashion spread ‘Summer Shine’ (pg 264). What were you like at five? I was introduced to Madonna’s Who’s That Girl. So, oversized bows in hair? Check. Lace frocks? Check. Faux microphone? That too.
What’s your secret past? I was an avid supporter of the ‘more is more’ movement. Why wear a single print when you could wear five? A leading film critic and entertainment journalist, RAJEEV MASAND has thrice been awarded the National Television Award for Best Entertainment Critic. Currently the entertainment editor at CNN-IBN, he takes time out of his busy schedule to interview cover girl Deepika Padukone in ‘Winner Takes All’ (pg 128). What were you like at five? A kid obsessed with Jungle Book. You probably had to bribe me with candy to get me to stop singing The Bare Necessities of Life.
Whose on your A-List? George Clooney, who manages to make hugely entertaining movies that still say something important about the world we live in.
What’s your secret past? I was once painfully skinny. I promise. The editor of Sports Illustrated India, SIDDHANTH ANEY has worked with Hindustan Times and NDTV in the past. He profiles sportstars Dipika Pallikal and PV Sindhu in ‘Power Play’ (pg 166).
What were you like at five? I cannot remember too much, but I am sure I wasn’t quiet, articulate, and wellbehaved. Not much has changed since.
What’s your secret past? I used to be a banqueting waiter while studying in London. I once served dinner to Richard Branson. I was expecting a rewarding evening but he didn’t leave a penny! My secret present is that I am trying to get more followers to find my way out of twitter loserville (@siddhanthaney).
