Chaos in Rajya Sabha over status of Andhra Pradesh

- HT Correspondent letters@hindustantimes.com

NEW DELHI: The Congress derailed the proceedings of the Rajya Sabha on Monday afternoon as it demanded that the House takes up a private member bill on special status for Andhra Pradesh.

The House could not carry out regular business as Congress members trooped into the Well of the House to press their demand.

The Bill, which was to be moved by Congress member KVP Ramchandra Rao on July 22 during Private Member Business, could not be taken up on that day as the House was adjourned due to ruckus over Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Bhagwant Mann’s controversial video, which the BJP said had compromised the security of the parliament.

Deputy leader of Congress in Upper House Anand Sharma said “grave injustice” was done when the ruling party and its cabinet ministers disrupted the House on Friday as a result of which the private member bill could not taken up.

Congress members repeatedly trooped into Well of the House, shouting “Andhra wants justice”, forcing Kurien to adjourn the House twice for 15 minutes before finally adjourning the House for the day minutes after 3pm.
