ROHTAK: Union minister of steel Birender Singh was injured when his foot slipped while getting down from a helicopter at Uchana town in Jind district on Friday.

The minister had come from Delhi along with human resource development (HRD) minister Prakash Javadekar to lay the foundation stone of a Kendriya Vidyalaya at Budayan village in the district.

Birender, who received minor injuries in his leg and back, had to take rest near the helipad for about an hour before proceeding to the event. A team of doctors had to be rushed in for his check-up.

Uchana is the assembly constituency of his MLA wife Prem Lata. The last time the Union minister had come to the constituency, a herd of buffaloes had suddenly stormed onto the helipad where his helicopter was all set to make a landing. The pilot’s alertness avoided a mishap that time.

Birender later addressed the gathering in Budayan village, while sitting on a chair. “Sadhus and sants address their supporters while sitting on chairs. Politicians speak while standing. But what can I do? I’m forced to sit due to my injury,” he quipped.
