CHANDIGARH/AMBALA : Haryana Police on Wednesday strengthen­ed security measures to maintain law and order and prevent any obstructio­n to traffic in Ambala City and on National Highway-1 in view of the main opposition party Indian National Lok Dal (INLD)’s call for march to Punjab border for digging the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal on Thursday.

Haryana director general of police KP Singh, additional director general of police RC Mishra and senior civil and police officers visited the Punjab-Haryana border to take stock of the situation.

ADGP Mishra, who is also heading the Ambala range, said nine additional companies (about 900 police personnel) of the state police have been deployed in Ambala City and on the NH-1. He said the Union government has also sent five additional companies.

He said police are on high alert and no one will be allowed to disturb law and order.

Mishra said traffic diversions have been finalised and police nakas have been set up in Ambala City as well as on the NH-1 to ensure smooth vehicular movement. He said residents have been informed about the measures.

The INLD has announced to undertake a march to Kapuri village in Patiala to dig the SYL canal. Led by leader of opposition Abhay Chautala and party state president Ashok Arora, party workers will start their march from the new grain market in Ambala City and go up to Shambhu Barrier, which is the Haryana-Punjab border on NH-1.

INLD district chief Sheeshpal said over one lakh party workers will reach Ambala on Thursday.

Ambala superinten­dent of police Abishek Jorwal said duty magistrate­s will be deployed and 10 blockades will be erected on the 24-km stretch of NH-1 till the Punjab border. He said marchers will not be allowed to carry digging implements.
