The initiative by the J&K government to curtail wasteful expenditure on weddings is laudable, but allowing 500 people and (only) seven non-vegetarian varieties is too much. A law is needed for the country in this regard. The wedding party or ‘baraat’ should be limited to 25 members. The gathering can be served beverages and snacks. Liquor should be avoided. Instead of hiring marriage palaces, dharamshalas/ gurdwaras/schools could be the venue. Clearance from the income tax department on expense limit should be a must. Jaswant Singh, Chandigarh
