JALANDHAR: A phone call helped the city police crack the mystery behind the murder of a businessman’s 60-year-old mother, wife and a guest in the posh Lajpat Nagar locality of Jalandhar on Thursday evening. The businessman’s extra-marital affair was at the nub of it, said the police, after arresting him and his alleged paramour on Friday.

Of the three women killed — Daljeet Kaur, Paramjeet Kaur, 35, and Khushwinder Kaur, 40 — Daljeet’s son Amaninder Singh, 40, and co-accused Tejinder Kaur, 29, planned to kill only his wife Paramjeet, police said. Amaninder had an illicit relationship with Tejinder since 2012, when she was an accountant in his factory. He even bought a house in Rama Mandi in 2015 for Tejinder, whose estranged husband was an employee in the same factory, the police probe said.

Amaninder, whose father Jagjeet Singh is an old-time trader and industrialist of the city, had been seeking a divorce from Paramjeet, but family objected. Two months ago, Amaninder’s mother and a sister even went to Tejinder’s house, where he stayed often, and had heated arguments with her. “That’s when Amaninder decided to get rid of his wife by killing Paramjeet, with whom he has two sons and a daughter,” said police commissioner Arpit Shukla.

Amaninder hired Vipin Kumar of Dhilwan who was working at his fuel station, and Amritpal Singh of Sarhala Kalan in Hoshiarpur, for the murder police said. They had sought Rs 10 lakh for killing Paramjeet, but the deal was settled at Rs 8 lakh, of which Amaninder paid Rs 1.04 lakh in January, police investigations have concluded. They had brought a .32-bore revolver from UP’s Ghaziabad and showed it to Amaninder before the murder, it is further alleged.

A RECCE AND THE CALL

“They were asked to carry out the murder between 4 pm and 5 pm by Amaninder, as his wife used to remain alone at home during that time.

But, on Thursday, Amaninder’s mother and a guest also happened to be present,” said Shukla.

Shukla said that, on February 21, both the killers had entered the family house on the pretext of repairing CCTV cameras as representatives of the manufacturer. They closely examined the house and disconnected the camera system.

“On Thursday, they met Amaninder around noon, and later barged into the house at 4 pm and shot all the women at point-blank range, and fled from the back gate. They knew where the gate keys were kept,” Shukla said.

Immediately after the crime, one of the killers called Amaninder at 4.37pm on his phone to inform that the work was done. While scanning Amaninder’s call details, police zeroed in on the number.

He was detained on Friday morning, but police waited until after the cremation for a formal arrest. Since Amaninder had also phoned Tejinder after the murder, cops had detained her on Thursday night but formally arrested her too only on Friday. During interrogation, she broke down and disclosed the plan, police said.

As for the hired killers who are on the run, two police teams are looking for them.

“They will be arrested soon,” Shukla claimed, and praised his team for cracking the case within 24 hours.

AUTOPSY REVEALS BRUTALITY

On Friday afternoon, the bodies were handed over to the families after post-mortem by a panel of three doctors. Autopsies revealed that the killers were brutal. Besides a bullet, a 16-cm screwdriver was extracted from the throat of Khushwinder Kaur. Three bullets each were removed from the bodies of Daljeet Kaur and Paramjeet Kaur. The bodies were cremated in the evening.
