Cancellation report filed in DA case against former DGP Virk
SASNAGAR: Ten years after registering a case of disproportionate assets (DA) against Punjab former director general of police (DGP) SS Virk, a probe panel set up by the state government filed a cancellation report in the court of Puneet Mohan Sharma, additional district and sessions judge, SAS Nagar, saying it has found no evidence to substantiate the allegations. The case to come up for hearing on March 7.
The VB had in September 2007 registered a case and arrested Virk on charges of possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income and misuse of official position under Sections 168, 169, 216, 218, 420, 447, 448, 467, 468, 471, 506 and 120 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Prevention Of Corruption Act. Virk, a 1970-batch IPS officer of the Maharashtra cadre, was arrested in Delhi.
In March 2008, the VB filed a chargesheet against Virk for having “disproportionate assets” worth Rs 16.86 crore and the supplementary chargesheet was filed in August 2008, wherein Virk was accused of having “unaccounted money” of Rs 3.12 crore in more than 35 bank accounts.
Virk, considered close to former chief minister Amarinder Singh, was suspended by the SAD-BJP government in a land grab case. He was later reinstated and retired from his parent cadre. He had sought repatriation to parent cadre after serving on deputation for 18 years. Over the years, four challans were filed in the case.
Following Virk’s plea in 2008, the Punjab and Haryana high court handed over the case to a probe panel set up by the Punjab government on the court’s directions.
The supplementary challan filed by probe panel, headed by Patiala senior superintendent of police SK Asthana, contradicted Virk’s claim that the Chimney Heights resort in Zirakpur was purchased by him and it was then renovated. After assessing all records, it was found that Virk had got constructed the resort without seeking prior permission from the state government, the supplementary challan stated, while pointing out that no permission had been obtained for commercial use of the resort for marriages and other functions.
