midnight sneak-out by two teenager sisters, Priti (16) and Jyoti (15), was so big a blot on the family’s honour that their parents pushed them into a canal. As per the investigations, a plan was in place to make the murder look as if the sisters took their own lives as the father had made them write a suicide note.

Girls’ mother Laxmi has reportedly confessed to the police that she and her husband Uday Chand made a plan to get rid of the daughters by throwing them in Sidhwan canal. Uday reportedly made his daughters write a suicide note and planned to file a missing person’s complaint after throwing them into a canal. But the sisters were pulled out of the water by some passersby the next morning and one of them, Priti, survived to spill the beans.

Sounding remorseful over their deed, Laxmi said for two years, she was aware that her daughters had gone astray, but couldn’t share this with her husband as he was short-tempered.

Laxmi told the police that on Monday night, the family went to sleep when Jyoti and Priti were still studying. “At about 12:30am, a neighbour knocked at our door and told that Jyoti and Priti had gone with two boys on motorcycles. Our daughters returned at 3am and refused to disclose where they had gone and with whom,” Laxmi said. She said they even slapped the daughters and Uday threatened to throw them in the canal, to which the sisters retorted saying “he should go ahead”.

Laxmi said they took the daughters to the canal, gagged them with a dupatta, strangled them, and pushed them into the water. She, however, didn’t admit that the girls were drugged, as being claimed by the survivor daughter.

PAU SHO sub-inspector Davinder Sharma said Priti told them that their parents had drugged them and took them to the canal in the three-wheeler.

Hours after being pushed into the canal, Priti and Jyoti were pulled out of the water by some passersby and rushed to hospital, where Jyoti died. After recording statement of Priti, the PAU police registered a murder case against her parents. ‘I HAVE FORGIVEN MY FATHER’ Priti said that she has forgiven her father and doesn’t want any punishment for him even as she has recorded a statement against her parents in the court.

She told police that her father was a strict man, but she cannot see him behind bars. Priti has been sent to Nari Niketan, Jalandhar. One of her elder sisters Ritu is married in Delhi. Her younger brother 11-year-old Nitin is now staying with their relatives.

Police produced Laxmi before a court on Thursday and she was sent to two-day police custody. The SHO said efforts were on to nab Uday.
