HATE CRIMES IN US

-

With three incidents of hate crime targeted at Indians within two weeks in the US, there is no doubt left about racism prevalent in the world’s ‘oldest democracy’. Earlier, Afro-Americans were the soft targets, but now it seems Indians are bearing the brunt of new US President’s divisive agenda. There is an immediate need for our foreign ministry to intervene and ensure safety of Indians working in the US. Gurpreet Singh, Chamkaur Sahib II Although US President Donald Trump categorically denounced the attack on an Indian techie, his rhetoric during elections and even after assuming power has undeniably provoked racists, anti-immigrants and religious bigots. The evil genie is out of the bottle, leading to an upsurge in incidents of hate crime targeted at immigrants. Trump should address the nation to foster solidarity. Ajay Kaushik III Racism and hate crimes were assumed to be problems affecting other ethnicities in the US, not the Indians. But the spate of attacks on Indians has shaken the community. It’s high time all Indians, including scientists and researchers and software engineers, return to their nation, and show the US how it cannot survive without them. Shivangi Goel IV Divisive politics is the reason behind rise in hate crimes in the US. People like Donald Trump forward the agenda of hatred to come to power. He promised Americans jobs by restricting outsourcing and sending back people from other countries. In India, too, politicians divide communities by favouring one over the other. Rahat Ali, Mohali V The recent happenings in the US have spelled doom on Indians living there. Hate crimes were witnessed even before Trump assumed presidency, but now the hate-mongers seem to be having a field day under the new administration. Abhaysher Mann
