LUDHIANA: This Holi is set to give the feel of Diwali going by the bulk orders for ‘laddoos’ and other sweets as much-awaited assembly election results are to be declared on Saturday, two days before the festival. Also, firecrackers are in great demand.

Owners of some sweetmeat shops in the city have their hands full as they are receiving orders in bulk for ‘motichoor laddoos’ and other sweets from leaders of different political parties.

Punjab Congress general secretary Amarjeet Singh Tikka said, “We have placed an order for 500 boxes of ‘motichoor laddoos’ with two shops in Model Town on behalf of sitting MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu and local MP Ravneet Singh Bittu. Bittu is contesting from Jalalabad (Fazilka) assembly segment, and party workers have made arrangements to celebrate his victory here as he is the sitting MP.”

“The orders will cost us about ₹1 lakh. Other Congress leaders, Sanjay Talwar from Ludhiana East, Sudarshan Dabur from Ludhiana Central and Rakesh Pandey from Ludhiana North, have also placed orders on their own,” he said.

Owner of a sweetmeat shop , Narendar Singh, said, “We are keeping ready around 300kg of ‘motichoor laddoos’. Though no political leader has specifically placed orders with us, the sweets will be exhausted anyway.” The owner of another popular sweetmeat shop too said they are preparing sweets in bulk without wiating for the order.

Lok Insaf Party candidate from Atam Nagar Simarjeet Singh Bains said, “Our supporters have placed bulk orders for laddoos, barfis and chocolates. Some confectioners who support us are preparing sweets voluntarily for the big day.”

The Ward 68 councillor in Atam Nagar assembly segment, Parminder Singh Soma, said, “Party workers and supporters are quite exuberant and busy making preparations for celebrations. Party workers have placed orders for ‘laddoos’ and ‘barfi’ in their respective areas.”

Shiromani Akali Dal secretary and spokesperson Daljit Singh Cheema said, “A mature politician will never place bulk order for sweets in advance. “Order for sweets is placed only after victory,” he said.
