CAPT GOVT’S DECISIONS WELCOME

The newly-formed Congress government in Punjab deserves kudos for its decision to ban beacon lights on vehicles In Punjab, it is very common to see plaques fixed on the vehicles of members of local bodies and party leaders flaunting their posts. This should also be prohibited.

All the decisions taken in the first cabinet meeting of Capt Amarinder government are praiseworthy. The decision to ban liquor shops along the highways and curtailment of liquor shops, doing away with beacon lights for ministers, opening of sainik schools augurs well for the common man. Shammi Sharma, Patiala

Capt Amarinder govt’s move to doing away with beacon lights is appreciable. Many governments had come and gone, but it was never given a thought. Everyone is hopeful that the new CM will come out with more such policies for the betterment of Punjab . Pawan Muggowal, Mahilpur

CONTROVERSY OVER EVMS

The allegations of tampering of EVMs to favour a particular party surface from time to time, which erode the public confidence in the electoral system. It’s now incumbent on the election commission to issue a detailed clarification with proof regarding the reliability of the EVMs.

Paramjit Singh, Patiala

The recent hullabaloo over the possibility of tampering of the EVMs is illogical. The same parties didn’t complain about this when they won. So, they should rather take the mandate of people with humility and introspect what actually went wrong. As far as election reforms are concerned, it is a dynamic process that keep son changing with the time.

Kashish Thapar, Amritsar Navjot Sidhu is the favourite child of controversy. After being elevated as a minister, he has declared to continue with a TV show he has been associated with for long. He has gone ahead with it even as it is unethical or may be illegal. He will prove to be a constant source of disruption for the Congress and for Captain Amarinder. His only interest should have been welfare of the people of Punjab. Dr Devinder Garg, Chandigarh

A HOUSE FOR MR BADAL

The allotment of free accommodation for former CM Parkash Singh Badal will not go well with the electorate who’ve rejected the Akalis. This vindicates the perception that Captain was hand in glove with Badals to keep the Aam Aadmi Party out of the power. They (Badals) have enough money to pay for a rented accommodation. Subhash Vashisht, Ludhiana

Parkash Singh Badal will be given a govt accommodation, along with other facilities such as vehicle, doctors, stenographer. This will be done by tweaking the

rules as former CMs are entitled to such facilities going by the existing norms. Having amassed so much wealth, why cannot he buy a house? To please Badal, the Capt government should not set a wrong precedent. IPS Anand, Gurgaon The election commission should accept Arvind Kejriwal’s demand and conduct manual counting of paper receipts generated by VVPAT machines used in some assembly segments during the Punjab polls. Kejriwal claimed that the verified paper trail option was available at 32 places in Punjab, but records show it was done only in eight constituencies — Qadian, Pathankot, Moga, Mansa, Raikot, Majitha, Fatehgarh Sabib, Bathinda Rural — of which Congress won four, AAP three and SAD one. NOTHING INDECENT IN BEGUM JAAN

Begum Jaan, a movie to be released on April14, boldly depicts the harsh realities of the Partition. Though many of the dialogues are abusive but they are not out of place. People often take offence to use of indecent words in movies. It is difficult for anyone to find out what is decent and what is not. The censor board needs to take a liberal stand. Diksha Goyal

CAPT’S SECOND INNINGS

After ten years of wait, Captain Amarinder Singh has started his second innings as the executive head of the state. It’s the right time for the scion of Patiala royal family to prove himself as the savior of Punjab. The focus should be to first curb drugs and put an end to farmer suicides. Harkanwar Kaur, Amritsar

THE SAFFRON JUGGERNAUT

The previous UPA regime held India in a state of suspended animation before Modi transcended on the scene and instilled hope. So far, Narendra Modi’s performance has been unblemished except for audacious note ban move . However, his popularity has not ebbed as evident from assembly election results. Without gauging the zeitgeist, the opposition seems to be trapped in cynicism. Unless they shun this, it is impossible to stop the saffron juggernaut in 2019. Dr Abhinav Sharma, Ludhuana
