HAMIRPUR : It’s set to be Anil Dhiman of BJP versus Prem Kaushal of the Congress for the Bhoranj assembly by-election that is going to be held on April 9.

The Congress party has finalised Prem Kaushal as its candidate from the seat, a spokesman of the party told HT here on Sunday. Kaushal, 55, is a close confidante of chief minister Virbhadra Singh and chairman of the district marketing board.

He started his political career with the NSUI during his college years and had served as the president of the college student council in 1984. Thereafter, he became an active member of the Congress party and started working in Mewa (reserve), now Bhoranj assembly constituency. He was given the party ticket in 1998 but lost the election to ID Dhiman of the BJP by 5,417 votes.

In 2003, he was denied a party ticket but contested as an independent but also lost second time.

However, thereafter, he returned to the Congress party fold and remained its active worker under the patronage of chief minister Virbhadra Singh.

BJP’s Anil Dhiman would file his nomination papers on Monday before taking part in a rally at Bhoranj. The rally would also be addressed by senior BJP leaders of the district and state. Anil Dhiman is the son of Late Ishwar Dass Dhiman whose death necessitated by election.
