Activists blame poor policing and tardy judicial system for the spurt in crimes

LAW STUDENT’S RAPE AND MURDER (April 2016) A Dalit law student Jisha was found murdered in her one-room house near Kochi in April 2016. Her body had 30 stab wounds and was mutilated and intestines pulled out. A casual labourer Anarul Islam, hailing from Assam, was arrested after two months. It led to the exit of Oommen Chandy regime.

ASSAULT ON ACTRESS (February 18, 2017): A well-known south Indian actress was abducted, assaulted and forced to pose for photos and videos in a moving car in Kochi. All seven perpetrato­rs, including the main accused Pulsar Sunil, a history-sheeter, have been held.

HOLY CRIME (February 28): The rape of a 16-year-old came to light after the arrest of priest Father Robin Vadakkumch­ery. The victim gave birth to a baby early in February in a private hospital and later shifted to an orphanage being run by the church. Five nuns and two doctors are on the run for covering the incident.

RAPE AND MURDER OF MINOR SISTERS (March 4): The shocking sexual assault and murder of two minor sisters came to light after the death of the youngest, a nine-year-old, on March 4. Both killed within a span of two months. Four, including the cousin brother of the victims, were arrested in connection with the crime.

SEXUAL ASSAULT ON 7 INMATES OF ORPHANAGE (MARCH 6): Police arrested six persons in Wayanad district for sexually exploiting seven minor girls of an orphanage. They were lured using sweets and mobile phones.
