LUDHIANA: Three traffic cops were given premature retirement here on Wednesday after they challaned a Sikh woman for driving without a helmet in defiance of police commissioner’s order not to challan any commuter for traffic violation at least for a month as a ‘goodwill gesture’.

Those given retirement have been identified as ASIs Kulwinder Singh, Davinder Singh, and head constable Neel Kanth.

Commissioner Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, who had assumed charge on March 17, termed the act of challaning a Sikh woman a “deep-rooted conspiracy to defame him”. “Despite clear directions that no challan should be issued in Ludhiana for another month, the cops did the opposite and also told the Sikh woman that I have instructed them to do so. This was all done to drag me in a controversy at the behest of an IG-rank officer who wants to replace me,” he said.

He said premature retirement was only the beginning and many more corrupt personnel will be shown the door. “The overhauling is being done in the larger interest of the force. All the cops who fail to obey orders will be dealt with a heavy hand ,” he said.

He said the cops have been given retirement with all the benefits in accordance with the service rules.

As the news of the decision spread, there were murmurs of resentment among the rank and file as cops gathered at the police lines and discussed the issue in hushed voices. The cops later attended the commissioner’s briefing.
