CONGRESS MLA FLAUNTS RED BEACON
TARNTARAN: Sukhpal Singh Bhullar, who has been elected to the Punjab assembly on the Congress ticket from Khemkaran, arrived for a meeting at the district administrative complex here on Thursday in a car with red beacon atop it.
Questioned on his defiance of the cabinet decision against red beacons, Bhullar’s first reaction was: “We give due respect to Captain Amarinder Singh and his directions. Red beacon is a small thing, even if he asks to discard the car, we will do so without any hesitation.”
The very next moment, the MLA did a volte-face and said: “We worked very hard to get this status and people of my area want to see me in the car with red beacon... We have installed the red beacon and will not remove it.”
Bhullar said he along with other MLAs will go to Chandigarh and request Capt to review the decision. “Then we will see what’s Captain Sahib’s decision,” he said.
Congress MLA from Tarn Taran Dr Dharambir Agnihotri, who was also there to attend the meeting, came in a car without red beacon. “Obeying Captain’s directions, I have shunned the red beacon,” he said, adding he could not comment on other MLAs.
Cabinet minister Rana Gurjit Singh had also expressed displeasure over giving up the red beacon. “We worked very hard for it for many years, and now you say remove it. What about security issues?” he had told HT on Tuesday. After the cabinet decision on red beacons taken during its first meeting on Saturday, Capt had issued a press statement on Tuesday, asking all MLAs to shun VIP culture.
