Mothers tried to get rid of them, but luck prevailed over ill-will

SBS NAGAR : Luck prevailed over the ill will of their respective mothers. After attempts of their mothers to get rid of them, 5-year-old Lovepreet and newborn Khushi, are responding well to the treatment in different hospitals.

The distressed mother of Lovepreet had stabbed him in the neck and abdomen with a kitchen knife on Sunday at Sajawalpur village near here, before she took her own life.

The child was lying in a pool of blood when his father Jaspal reached the house.

He was first taken to civil hospital and then referred to PGIMER, Chandigarh.

In the suicide note, the mother had written that she was killing him because she didn’t want him to suffer in her absence.

A week-old Khushi was rescued by villagers and police from a dry 18-foot well on Tuesday evening, where she was thrown by her unidentified mother.

She was admitted to Banga civil hospital from where she was referred to Jalandhar civil hospital and then taken to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital in Amritsar. Both are responding well to the treatment, it is learnt.

Dr Karnail Singh, a professor in paediatrics (Unit 2) at Amritsar’s medical college, said the infant was out of danger.

“There is no need for any surgery. She weighs 1.8 kg and is under constant observation,” he said. Medical superintendent Dr Ram Sarup Sharma is funding the entire treatment cost of Khushi.

Behram station house officer (SHO) Surinder Chand said that a probe was on and efforts underway to trace the mother of the girl.

JS Gidda, general secretary of NGO Upkar Coordination Society, which has been working against female foeticide in SBS Nagar, said volunteers were working to trace the mother of the girl.

Lovepreet’s uncle Kulwinder Ram said the boy underwent a surgery as he had deep wounds on the neck, abdomen, and arms.

“Lovepreet is able to speak now and has been shifted from intensive care unit,” he said. “We are waiting for his discharge from the hospital. We want to see him going to school and forget what had happened,” Ram said.
