NEW DELHI: The crime branch of the Delhi police arrested a hawala operator on Friday morning for allegedly transferring money for AIADMK deputy general secretary TTV Dinakaran in an alleged bribery case.

Naresh alias Nathu Singh was held for transferring around ₹1 crore from Dinakaran to middleman Sukesh Chandrashekhar via hawala channels. Naresh was produced in a city court and remanded to two-day police custody. An investigating officer said Naresh, a Chandni Chowk resident, is Chandrashekhar’s friend and has helped him transfer hawala money in the past. Police said they will interrogate Naresh to identify other accused.

Delhi police arrested Dinakaran and his aide Mallikarjun for allegedly paying middleman Chandrashekhar to get the AIADMK party’s disputed two-leaves symbol by allegedly bribing election officials. Police have not identified any election official who was in touch with Chandrashekhar or Dinakaran.

Police had recovered ₹1.30 crore in cash from Chandrashekhar’s room in a five-star hotel. He had allegedly assured Dinakaran that he would bribe election officials and get a favourable decision in his favour.

The police team arrested Dinakaran earlier this week after interrogating him for around four days. Police have taken Dinakaran to Chennai for investigation. It’s alleged that Dinakaran promised Chandrashekhar ₹50 crore if he could get the disputed symbol for him.
